The Search Engine Optimization industry has gotten a bad image the last few years.
Many small to medium businesses have had an experience with an SEO company that left them feeling taken advantage of… perhaps even lied to.
Here’s a quick list to ask your SEO company to see if they are being honest with you:
1. What services do you provide for my monthly payment?
This seems simple enough, but many irreputible SEO companies will hide behind terms like “proprietary” when asked what they actually do for the money.
If your SEO company can’t give you an itemized list of what they actually do for the money you pay them this only means one thing: They aren’t doing anything for the money you pay them. Or worse, they may be doing things that could really harm your site. Read more about the 5 worst SEO mistakes here.
2. What are the websites or blogs you use to backlink my website?
If your SEO company says their blog network is “secret” they are lying to you. If their blog network was so secret how would Google find it? If Google can find it then there are any number of ways for you to find out about their blog network.
In fact I’ll give you a free list of domains that backlink your site if your SEO company won’t. Just contact me.
3. How long will it take for my site to start to rank on Google?
If you’re SEO company tells you it could take 6 months or more for SEO to start working be very suspicious.
It’s true that SEO can take time to fine tune, but Google doesn’t take months to spider the content on your site. You can see changes to your search strategy start to happen in less than a week. Most companies that tell you SEO “takes a long time” are trying to keep you quiet… for a few more months. They can collect from you for a few more months… and then they expect you to cancel.
Which brings us to:
4. How high is your client turnover rate?
This question is hard to get a real answer to but it’s still worth asking. If your SEO company seems to make their money from turning over lots of clients it’s most likely because they are not very effective.
5. What happens if I choose not to renew my contract?
Contracts are a reality of business and most web companies have some type of contract. What happens to your website if you don’t renew your contract? Do you own any content that the SEO company created?
Some SEO companies will structure things to make it very difficult to end a contract. You should be able to quit with 30 days notice, and own any content created if you end the contract.
There are good SEO companies out there and a few questions can help you determine how good yours is.
